We formed dubriders in late 2004 due to a lack of Downhill riding facilities in our local area. It wasn’t always this way, but with the modern times we live in today, insurance and liability has led to many of our trails being torn down. Now we have the club we are uniting Mountain Bike and BMX riders in the South East of Kent as a single powerful voice, so that we can once more have thriving trails to rip on without fear of the evil bulldozers! We are aiming to get both new MTB and BMX facilities in the future.
We currently have one site in Dover which will be ready to use soon, and one in a secret location nearby. This will be under construction shortly so keep your ears open for news on that. Mainly we all ride at Sandy Lanes in Folkestone, but check out our trails page for more on that.
In order to ride at various locations we will need insurance to do so, which is where we come in. Membership to dubriders will give you insurance cover up to the sum of £5 million at club events, this is through our affiliation to British Cycling. In fact, we are the first BC affiliated club in Kent that cater for Downhill riding, isn’t that sweet!
Being affiliated to BC not only gets us insurance, but it gives our club structure. We have two BC trained coaches who are CRB checked and first aid trained. Any other volunteers of the club who will be working with children have to go through the same process for ultimate peace of mind.
We hope to be running regular coaching sessions, with bike maintenance during the winter and actual riding during the sunny spells which we occasionally get in this country. We also plan to do trips to races and other events in the country. Our plan, as well as trying to find a permanent DH venue locally, is to try and get young kids off the streets and into the sport of cycling which is not only bags of fun but healthy and kind to mother nature.
So what will I get as a member?
- Well, as above you will be covered insurance wise when you ride at a club event.
- We go to many meetings locally both for cycling and youth services to try and get better facilities for you, so you get representation at these.
- 10% discount at Activ Sports shop in Folkestone. For a map/directions click here
- As part of the Michelin rider support programme, you can order their tyres at a very nice discount through us.
- Fun friendly atmosphere to ride, chill, get fit or learn some new skills.
- We might even chuck you a few stickers (if you’re lucky!)
Enough preaching, if you like what you have read then download a membership form here in PDF Format. Or simply ask one of us next time you come for a ride! The membership fees are made as cheap as possible to ensure no one gets left out due to money problems, but leave us to pay for all the fees and other bits. If you’ve got any questions then email Martin here.
Hope to see you soon!
